Что не куплен, не продал совести и ценностей;

THERE ARE NO FORMER OFFICERS

M. Gogulan Translation Em Rostverg

A birthday is a time to make mental notes again
That you haven’t betrayed moral guidelines,
And Fate, with the songs of paradise birds or cicadas
Has failed to lull feelings, entirely human,
To sleep inside you for always…

It’s a time to realize the charm of life and a new understanding,
How wonderful it is just to exist, untouched by vanity and bragging…
No matter what, or how, or where… – being only tiny sand grains forever –
Which will never destroy orderly ranks of brigades and battalions…
(Did that soldier, when saving his troop, think that he deserved
Honor, salary raise and praise… – Glory to him and sweet lot!) …

Here, by the sea, on the edge of Russia, the Baltic barrier stood,
Formed from «sand grains», such «minuscule particles»…
Yet they arose, defending all, some were seen and some were not,
Loyal faces, hearts serene, loving their native land, devoted to it…
Alexander Nevsky, Yaroslav the Wise, Peter the Great, and Hannibal…
Kutuzov, Wrangel, Khitrovo, Tiesenhausen, Palen, Ficquelmont…
Kruzenshtern, de Tolly, Lieven, Bellingshausen, Benckendorff and Fersen…

Evgeny Nikonov – a sailor, who was burned alive,
He did not flinch and did not treacherously give up…
There are so many like him, grains of sand, but otherwise
The great state surely would have fallen apart…
In Rus', the Baltics have always been a critically vital terrain,
Although in the outskirts, it’s an outpost… of the brave…
We are all, of course, without doubt, sand grains of the entire planet.
Though being small, indeed, we make its core, salt of the Earth!

In Russia, warriors, for certain, outshine all sorts of lyricists.
And only those, «in whom the proud spirit of citizenship lives,
For whom there is no comfort, no relief,» who strive for Russia and for peace,
Are destined to be born warriors and soldiers, and marines…
Even alone upon the field, behind them stands a nation, their shield…
Who carry honor, courage, and God's grace in their hearts,
Who offer their lives and their health for our flesh and bones,
And therefore, believe us, everyone here knows
That «there are no former officers»!
