The soft power that has been saving the world

I WANT TO GO TO PARIS ONCE AGAIN

I WANT TO GO TO PARIS ONCE AGAIN

M. Gogulan Translation Em Rostverg

Even Girshevich once proclaimed:
If you see Paris
You may meet your end.

I saw that city… twice, indeed,
And here I am — alive, with no ecstatic dreams.
Not from the first encounter, nor the second
Did Paris touch my core deep senses …
But what’s to do? I do not love
Stereotypes and trite remarks,
Nor can I sigh within big crowds…
(I always walk my own paths,
Not down the worn-through tracks
With potholes, ruts, and bumps alike…
To scorn or praise in public —
And worse, to “love” bad taste in fits of awe —
Oh no, please count me out:
Each has his own appointed roads!)

Yes, I was in Paris twice, yet failed to meet
True heirs, worthy of Béranger,
Dumas, Hugo, Stendhal and the rest…
Baguette, croissant, crouton, macaron —
Today look rather small, not quite bon ton…

Moreover, Chagall’s famed ceiling
In the Opéra Garnier — this kitsch —
Upset my intestines and feelings!
Only the Haussmann houses then
Restored my faith in miracles again.

And history…- it’s better learned from books:
In streets you’re likelier to meet
Distortions of the truth…

Frenchwomen worthy of admiring glances
I, well, encountered also once or twice —
And they, as it turned out, belonged to our tribe.

However, actually, it is not quite really so!
The Mona Lisa’s complex mien

At the Louvre, her simple smile,
Enchanted me beyond mind!
And now I want to go to Paris once again —
To gaze upon all controversial sights!
